Problem: Period A: (Accelerated English 12) - 19 students total, of those 19 students only 13 completed the reading assignment for The Fountainhead, of those 13 only 11 answered more than 50% of the short answer questions correctly.
Audience: Of those 19 students, 11 are females and 8 are males.
All students have a 12th grade reading level. Two females have reading levels equivalent to college level reading.
There are 2 African American students and 17 Caucasian students.
None have learning disabilities.
All students speak English. Two students can speak fluent Spanish as their second language.
What's Needed:
Online access to reminders for students to continue to engage in reading and complete assignment by the time school starts
Possible weekly assignments or check ins with instructor so that students stay on task and complete assignment on time
Access to instructors email during summer vacation so that students are given opportunities to reach instructor with any questions they might have about reading
Require students to do weekly assignments and turn them into the instructor each week to track their progress
Possibly change the book we're reading?
Objectives: Students will be able to explore and learn how to use NearPod as a learning environment online, as well as complete the reading and written assignment related to the reading in a time efficient manner.
Goal: Nearly 58% (11/19 students) of the class is currently completing less than 50% of the reading assignment questions assigned to them over the summer. The goal is to increase the competition percentage to at least 84% (16/19 students) completing 100% of the reading questions assigned to them.
This problem will be analyzed for 6 months, starting in January 2017. This will allow the instructor to analyze how students understand the reading material given to them before assigning the next upcoming class their summer reading assignment. It will provide feedback to the instructor about whether or not they achieved their goal before continuing the assignment that has previously failed.
Timeline:
January 9, 2017: Begin reading assignment with students. Introduce students to the problem at hand and make them aware that there has been low percentages of completed questions returned to the instructor. Get feedback from students to see if there is a common factor related to the low amount of participation for summer reading assignments.
January 16, 2016: No class held, holiday. Allow students to prepare for reading The Fountainhead.
January 23, 2017: Assign students to read the first chapter of the book, The Fountainhead, as well as answer five short answer questions to answer by the following week (Monday, January 30)
February 6, 2017: Review the questions with students in class to analyze what percentage of student completed the written questions. Introduce class to NearPod to engage them in an online classroom environment as well as a physical classroom setting. Assign them to read Chapter 2 of Fountainhead and to complete the NearPod exercises.
February 13, 2017: Review the answers for the NearPod exercises in class. Get feedback from students. Was it easier for them to answer questions and feel engaged outside of the classroom with NearPod? Assign them to read Chapter 3 and to do another NearPod assignment to analyze in two weeks.
February 20, 2017: Presidents Day, no school held today. Students have an extra week to complete the assignment given to them on Monday. Emailing the instructor is an option for students who feel they are unable to comprehend questions.
February 27, 2017: Assess students on the NearPod exercise assigned two weeks ago. If there is improvement in the percentage of students who are completing the written assignments on NearPod, the problem is continuing to improve. Assign reading and NearPod exercise for Chapter 4.
March 6, 2017: Assess students on the NearPod exercise assigned last week. If there is improvement in the percentage of students who are completing the written assignments on NearPod, the problem is continuing to improve. Assign reading and NearPod exercise for Chapter 5.
March 13, 2017: Assess students on the NearPod exercise assigned last week. If there is improvement in the percentage of students who are completing the written assignments on NearPod, the problem is continuing to improve. Assign reading and NearPod exercise for Chapter 6.

May 15, 2017: Assess students on progression through the work turned into the instructor on NearPod. Get students opinions on the new form of instruction by answering a survey. If this was successful and more beneficial to students, then there will be improvements for summer work completion by students who have access to an online classroom environment. Since NearPod is analyzed weekly, it will allow students to space out their reading and not feel overwhelmed, as well as complete weekly assignments instead of waiting last minute and not completing their work. The problem is now solved.
